I remember in the late 90s (when I was in middle school) saving up to buy a 40GB EIDE drive to put in my COMPAQ desktop tower to hold video I was shooting on MiniDV and ingesting into ADOBE PREMIERE over FireWire. How was I ever going to fill a 40GB drive? I’ll never be able to shoot that much footage. Ever.
Last week at work we had a shoot using an Arri Alexa digital cinema camera shooting 1080p/23.97fps ProRes444 files that were then sent to a colorist and then back to us in Avid DNxHD format for editing. Our default drive size for moving this kind of footage around is 500GB, and our DP just told us we’d better start sending him 1TB drives for multi-day shoots this summer because we could easily fill a 500GB drive in a day of shooting.
